HOW PAINTINGS TELL STORIES - LESSONS FROM STORYTELLER JOANNA

Joanna, a cross-cultural coach and storytelling advocate, has dedicated her work to using art as a bridge between cultures. Through her unique workshops, she has guided people through some of the world’s most iconic museums, including the Musée D'orsay and Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris, Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, and Museum of Fine Arts in Lille.

Joanna believes that art has the power to spark curiosity and open-mindedness. She explains, "a painting sparks conversation without judgment, there is no right or wrong. When participants share their stories inspired by the same piece of art, it becomes a beautiful way to exchange perspectives." She sees this same approach as essential in communication across cultures, where openness and curiosity create understanding.

One of her most impactful methods is the story circle. After viewing a painting, participants gather in small groups to share personal stories inspired by what they have seen. This approach provides a safe space for dialogue, where emotions and experiences can be expressed freely, without fear of judgment.

A particularly memorable moment happened at the Louis Vuitton Foundation, where a multicultural group viewed Henri Matisse’s The Red Studio. Participants with migration experiences shared reflections on what home and belonging truly mean. Their stories led to an emotional and deeply meaningful conversation, leaving a lasting impression on the group.

Joanna’s journey shows how art can bring people together, opening doors to empathy, connection, and cultural exchange.
